FIN·04 — Bulgaria Maternity Pay (2026)

Bulgaria Maternity Pay Calculator

Estimates your monthly maternity leave benefit under Bulgarian NOI (НОИ) rules for 2026 — 90% of your average income for the first 410 days, then a fixed amount until your child turns two.

Your income

Use your average gross (before-tax) insured income over the 24 months before your leave starts — this is what НОИ bases the calculation on.

How this is calculated, and an important caveat

For the first 410 calendar days (45 days before the due date plus 365 after birth), Bulgarian law pays 90% of your average gross insured income over the 24 months before your leave begins. Two limits apply: the income used in the calculation is capped at the maximum insurable income (€2,300 as of August 2026), and the resulting benefit cannot fall below the minimum guaranteed amount (€620.20/month for 2026). From day 411 until your child's second birthday, the benefit switches to a fixed €398.81 per month regardless of your prior income.

This is an estimate, not an official figure. НОИ (the National Social Security Institute) calculates your real amount from your actual employer-reported insurance data, and these thresholds are updated periodically — including mid-year, as the €2,300 cap was in 2026. Always confirm your exact entitlement with НОИ (nssi.bg) or your employer's HR office before making financial decisions based on this number.

You need at least 12 months of insurance contributions to the "Обща болест и майчинство" fund — these don't need to be continuous or with the same employer, just accumulated over your working life.

Yes, with the mother's written consent, the leave (and this same benefit) can transfer to the father or another actively insured family member, such as a working grandparent. A pensioner without an active employment relationship cannot receive it.

Only if you've voluntarily insured yourself for the "Обща болест и майчинство" fund — this isn't automatic for self-employed registrations, and the applicable income cap can differ slightly from the employed-worker figures used here.

There's a separate partial-benefit scheme for returning early, which pays a percentage of the fixed second-year rate on top of your salary — that scenario isn't covered by this calculator, since the rules and required conditions are more involved. Check directly with НОИ or your HR office.
