How BMI is calculated
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)². The standard adult categories from the World Health Organization are: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 is normal weight, 25–29.9 is overweight, and 30 or above is obese.
Not perfectly — BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat, so very muscular people can show a higher BMI without excess body fat, and it isn't designed for children, pregnant women, or the elderly in the same way as adults.
Treat it as a starting point for a conversation with a doctor or registered dietitian, not a diagnosis on its own.
No — the calculation happens entirely in your browser and nothing is saved or transmitted.
